About HHCU
Originally launched in 2018 by Martha Diaz as an edtech venture and microschool, Hip-Hop CommUniversity (HHCU) is rooted in cultural innovation and educational equity, reimagining learning through the lens of Hip-Hop.
HHCU draws on 50 years of Hip-Hop history, artistry, social entrepreneurship, and entertainment to engage and educate youth, educators, and lifelong learners—while advancing the professionalization of Hip-Hop education and strengthening the creative economy.
In its current iteration, the Hip-Hop Education Center has partnered with Hip Hop Congress, Inc. to relaunch and expand HHCU as a dynamic learning hub that bridges traditional instruction with real-world experience. Through music, dance, visual art, storytelling, entrepreneurship, technology, and community action, HHCU equips individuals with the tools for personal growth and collective transformation.
HHCU offers K–12 Hip-Hop Music Education Guidelines, accredited courses, workshops, training programs (including internships and apprenticeships), and fellowships—all grounded in career pathways and professional development. From beat-making and lyricism to financial literacy and tech empowerment, each offering is designed to build confidence, critical consciousness, and creative power.
Whether you're an aspiring artist, a dedicated educator, or a community elder with wisdom to share, Hip-Hop CommUniversity is a space where every voice is valued, every skill is honored, and every dream has room to grow.
To further strengthen the creative ecosystem, HHCU also features a marketplace, speakers bureau, and social network—amplifying job opportunities, funding and investment leads, event listings, and culturally relevant resources.
