Andrew Wang is a music educator, researcher, and advocate whose work explores the intersections of hip-hop, neurodiversity, and inclusive pedagogy. He has co-authored multiple publications with Dr. José Valentino Ruiz, including articles for the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) on hip-hop education, beatboxing for speech therapy, and the therapeutic and advocacy potential of rap. Together, they developed the FLOW Framework (Focus, Lyricism, Openness, Workmanship), a model designed to empower neurodivergent learners through creative music-making. Wang’s teaching and scholarship emphasize accessibility, innovation, and the transformative role of music in education and community life.

Hip Hop and Neurodivergence

Hip Hop and neurodivergence intersect through creativity, self-expression, and empowerment. Hip Hop’s core elements—MCing, DJing, beatboxing, graffiti, and breakdancing—embrace individuality, improvisation, and innovation, aligning closely with the strengths often found in neurodivergent communities, such as divergent thinking, sensory awareness, and hyperfocus. Many neurodivergent artists use Hip Hop as a tool for communication, regulation, and advocacy, transforming their differences into sources of artistry and resilience. In education and therapy, Hip Hop-based practices create inclusive environments where neurodiverse learners can engage through rhythm, movement, and storytelling, reinforcing belonging and self-worth.
